Carrefour hypermarket with big isle spaces

In Kenya, the most popular supermarkets in 2020 include Naivas juja city mall, Quickmart, Khetia’s, and Carrefour. They are situated in different areas such as Nairobi, Kisumu, Eldoret, and other counties.

In this article, we will focus on the unique shopping experience Carrefour and Naivas Supermarket offers today.

Carrefour is a multinational retailer which runs supermarkets and hypermarkets in countries like France, Chile, Argentina, Brazil and many more. The company was founded in 1882 by the IWC Schleifer family as Charlemagne department store. After some time it expanded to become one of the largest retail groups in Europe with over 12 billion Euros in revenue. They have stores in Kenya at the Westlands and Riverside malls which are the first of its kind to offer a one-stop shopping experience for your everyday needs including groceries, clothing, electronics, furniture and more.

Naivas is another supermarket chain based out of Nairobi which has 12 branches spread across Kenya. It was founded in 1952 and now offers everything from fresh produce to electronics. Naivas is a good alternative for those living in the East, Central and Rift Valley regions of Kenya.

Naivas has an edge over Carrefour as it uses locally sourced products whereas Carrefours relies on imports which can be costly when compared to Naivas’ offerings.

A popular youtuber, Suzy’s Homestead, compares the products according to the cheapest prices. Note: She doesn’t focus on the brand but mostly the size of the item. Check out the video below.

Carrefour has a wider variety of products on offer including electronics and furniture whereas Naivas offers more groceries, fresh produce, and everyday household items but not as many clothing options as Carrefour.

Even bbc focussed on Carrefour stores because of their daily, weekly, and monthly discounts. Not only to favor the customers’ but also help to budget. This link Carrefour in Kenya: The true price of the discounts shows the various discounts and promotions held often.

Both stores have their positives which make them unique in the Kenyan market today. It is up to you with what your priorities are to decide which store would be better for you.

At Carrefour, the layout is spacious and there’s no waiting time as compared to Naivas where it can get crowded due to a lack of space given by the owner or manager. At Naivas though you get quality produce at lower prices even at Carrefour.
