Top 5 Dog Breeds That Shed a Lot
2 Types of Coats: Double and Single
The double fur means that your canine has 2 layers of coat:
- a soft and short undercoat
- a coarse, long overcoat.
Undercoats protect pets from external problems such as dirt and bugs to regulate temperature. Overcoats safeguard the skin and undercoat from sun, heat, and other harmful elements.
A single coat is one layer of fur in any length or texture.
Top 5 dog breeds that shed the most
I. Chow Chow
The last breed that sheds a lot is the Chinese Chow Chow. Originally, they served as guard dogs, but now they are kept as pets. They have two fur types, smooth and rough. The latter is thick, while the former is woolly and soft. Their hair is thicker around the neck and head to form a fluffy mane.
II. The Alaskan Malamute
We have another large northern breed that normally drags heavy cargo across icy grounds in Alaska. Their thick double coat offers enough warmth during these ventures but produces lots of loose furs.
III. German Shepherd
Weighing between 50–90 pounds, the German shepherd’s activity level is quite high. Its life span goes to 10 years and portrays a confident and loyal personality. Also, their main characteristic is a tan and black coat that comes in shades of white, red, cream, and gray. What’s more, their overcoat is rough while the undercoat is soft.
IV. American Eskimo Dog
Most owners love the Eskimo dog because of its intelligence and social nature. Their high activity level and 13–15 years of life expectancy make them great companions. Brushing their coat a few times weekly will reduce the white fur before ending up on your couch, sofa, and all over the house.
V. Akitas
Akitas come from Japan and have a very large built. Originating from the mountains, their thick coat keeps them warm throughout the year. Also, the fur is short with a double layer structure which tends to shed a lot.
